Concerned you’re not lasting long enough in the bedroom? Your waist size may be one of the reasons behind your early blastoff, research in the International Journal of Impotence Research suggests.
In the study of 100 men, the researchers determined that that those with a waist measurement above 40 inches were more than three times as likely to suffer from premature ejaculation than guys with more streamlined guts.
They also discovered that 51 percent of men with premature ejaculation met the criteria for metabolic syndrome, which they defined as experiencing any three of the following heart-unhealthy factors: high blood pressure, high blood sugar, a waist circumference above 40 inches, low HDL, or good cholesterol, and elevated blood triglycerides.
In comparison, less than 1 out of 4 guys without premature ejaculation met the criteria for metabolic syndrome.
And of the guys who were premature ejaculators, those with metabolic syndrome ejaculated significantly quicker than those without the syndrome—1 minute and 49 seconds compared to 3 minutes and 43 seconds.
There are a bunch of reasons why the issues that comprise metabolic syndrome can cause premature ejaculation, too. High blood sugar, as seen in diabetes, can cause nerve issues and problems with nitric oxide production, both of which can reduce ejaculation time, the researchers say.
High blood pressure can also over-stimulate your sympathetic nervous system, which also sets the stage for premature ejaculation. Finally, abdominal obesity—as evidenced by a large waist size—can cause the conversion of testosterone to the female hormone estradiol, leading to a decrease in libido, performance anxiety, and also more sympathetic nervous system activity.
More research needs to be done to confirm the findings, and to see if getting the metabolic syndrome factors under control—say, through a combination of diet, exercise, and medication—can help you last longer in bed.
